Report from Cruisers 3 East Coast Championship, Howth Yacht Club 2009.

A disappointing local entry list didn’t reduce the fun both on and off the water for the DBSC Cruiser 3 fleet attending the East Coast Championships on the weekend of 14 – 16 August . Friday evenings 1830hrs race saw Supernova from the Royal Irish take a commanding lead in a 12-15knot westerly. Two quick rounds of a windward / leeward course with the windward mark set at .7nm saw the quarter tonner take line honours also winning on IRC and ECHO. Ross Doyle on Two Step took a very good 3rd on IRC and a 2nd on ECHO. Asterix welcomed back John Counihan on the helm and they brought her to 5th IRC and 3rd ECHO. Some tapas and a free bar courtesy of the sponsors Euro Car Parks ensured a lively evening in the clubhouse.
Saturday morning gave brisk westerly’s and a threat of rain, but the biggest threats were the powerful gusts coming over the course all too regularly, topping out at 32 knots. The PRO Derek Bothwell unusually kicked off the day with a triangle course which tested the crews to their limits on the power reaches. Brian, Nikki and Jorid showed well on their Shamrock Taiscealai and finished with a 6th, with Supernova and Asterix 3rd and 4th respectively. The PRO switched to W/L’s as the wind increased for the 2 afternoon races which led to some exciting racing, particularly downwind. The Malahide team of Goyave, Turnabout and Shennanigans reveled in the heavy going and became favourites to retain the team trophy, but the DL team of Pamafe, Two Step and Asterix were continuing to perform well and produced some good results in races 2 and 3. Michael Costello and his experienced team on Pamafe had their best result of the weekend with a great 3rd on ECHO in race 3. Meanwhile, Vince Gaffney on Alliance was showing his individual domination of the event with a 1/1/4, but the other Howth members of the team could not match his results, so Malahide sailed into a commanding lead chased by the DL team with the RIYC team in 3rd overall. Sunday morning saw more of the same weather – wind up to 25 knots and gusting into the 30’s. The McCormack / Ryan partnership on Saki, a great supporter of this event over the years, produced their best result of the weekend with a strong 7th, but the broach of the weekend had to go to Supernova. A heavy gust came through and Supernova had their first wipeout of the season with a Chinese gybe at a speed of 10.4 knots. Asterix and Two Step put in a good mornings work with a 4/5 and so cemented their position along with Pamafe in second place in the team event.
Supernova finished 3rd overall IRC and Two Step finished 2nd overall ECHO, with Malahide retaining the team trophy followed by DL and RIYC.
We are delighted to announce that 2010 will see the continuation of the sponsor Euro Carparks for this event thanks to Dave Cullen, and it will be hosted by a Dun Laoghaire club. We would welcome your feedback as to the number of days and format this event should have for next year. Although we have had a reduced turnout when the event is outside the bay, we have mustered up to 30 boats in recent years when held in Dun Laoghaire, and with the unique team prizes along with the individual IRC and ECHO titles on offer, we hope the East Coast Championship 2010 will become the highlight for Cruiser 3 racing next year.

Dave Cullen in Howth is expecting 8-10 HYC boats and 3-4 Malahide boats for the upcoming Cruisers 3 East Coast Championships. Dun Laoghaire have 7 entries confirmed and we are hopeful of getting a few more boats to travel which should see the total entry for the event top the 20 mark. A great way to finish the open events for the 2009 season - for those travelling there is free marina berthing and please remember to call the marina directly on 8392777 to be guaranteed a berth. |

As the East Coast Championships are on Saturday and the DBSC race is not a starred event, can we remind the class not to finish if they decide to race DBSC this Saturday. It was decided at the beginning of the season that we'd ask boats not to collect Saturday Series points that day to support and encourage East Coast Championships participation. |

CRUISERS 3 AGM
NATIONAL YACHT CLUB
20TH JANUARY 2009
1. Minutes of AGM 2008
Taken as read
2. Election of officers
Mairéad Ní Cheallacháin - Class Captain (proposed, David Bolger, seconded Declan Curtin)
Sybil McCormack (proposed David Bolger, seconded Anne O’Callaghan)
Kevin Glynn (proposed David Bolger, seconded Michael Walsh)
Ken Lawless (proposed David Bolger, seconded Hugh Kelly)
It was suggested that we approach Vespucci (as the only boat in the RStGYC) for a committee member, in order that we have representation from each club.
Election of committee members to specific roles will be undertaken by the committee. Vice captain to be decided by the committee.
3. Finance
The C3 account is €1202.48 in credit. Accounts for 2008 season were read through by David Bolger.
4. Any Other Business
David proposed that the class think about events or talks we might like to have, to be decided at the pre-season meeting. A number of speakers were suggested - Bill O‘Hara, Maurice O’Connell, Des McWilliams.
A weekend match racing in J80s or 1720s was suggested as a possibility. Declan Curtin described a weekend training in which he participated using the ISA’s J80s. The RIYC organised a weekend match racing in 1720’s. Both were described as very successful. The ISA have arranged to lease their J80s to different clubs in the country for 2 months at a time. C3 could investigate which clubs have these boats, and the possibility of organising such an event for the class. Cost would depend on the level of interest. Ken Lawless suggested that the RIYC could run such an event for C3 with their 1720s.
David Bolger brought up the subject of crowded start lines. He had discussed this on a number of occasions with members of DBSC committee. DBSC are not going to change the C3 class this year, however it remains a subject under review.
Courses not being complex enough was discussed. Often a windward leg, a straight run (possibly no gybe) and home. No learning opportunities. C3 should try to look at possible course changes to assist DBSC with their course setting.
C3 would benefit from an earlier start, so that we could be given longer courses.
Race management courses are run by DBSC, C3 should encourage participation so that we can contribute to assisting DBSC.
Sending C3 on the same course as larger, faster boats on evenings when the wind is obviously falling is a problem.
Michael Walsh pointed out that any implied criticism of DBSC and their Race Officers was possibly unfair. The Hut RO is restricted in his choice of courses by the selection made by MacLir RO. David Bolger again suggested that C3 may have ideas to run better courses, and should offer input and constructive criticism.
Declan Curtin said that there is no culture of protesting in C3, and suggested an “informal protest night” during the season where incidents could be discussed, possibly with a judge/referee in attendance. A talk was suggested on the procedures of lodging a protests, there are big procedural pitfalls involved.
On the social side, it was agreed that the monthly dinners in the different waterfront clubs were a success, and should be repeated. David had arranged a very interesting schedule of events (family cruise, cruise/race up the Liffey etc) for last season, but unfortunately most were defeated by the weather. We will arrange a similar schedule for this season and hope for better weather. A quiz night was mooted.
The preseason meeting will be arrange for shortly after the DBSC meet with class officers, probably early April. Manning the line will be hopefully arranged on a voluntary basis again. Sybil has details of boats which have done line duty in the last three years. These will be circulated, and volunteers sought from boats that have not done line duty in recent years. If not enough volunteers emerge, the committee will nominate boats.
Class fees were maintained at the same level as 2008 - €30. |
